In the 1942 film, Casablanca , Ilsa Lund says, "Play it, Sam. Play As Time Goes By." Rick Blaine said, " Sam, I thought I told you never to play...." Neither character ever said, "Play it again, Sam," yet invariably that misquote is attributed to Rick Blaine as played by Humphrey Bogart.

In his book, Nice Guys Finish Seventh: False Phrases, Spurious Sayings, and Familiar Misquotations Ralph Keyes said, "This is the Achilles heel of quotation collections: An initial error in one will be repeated so often by others that over time it gains authority through repetition alone." I love good quotes. I love correct quotes even better. I use quotes in both my writing and speaking and am constantly searching for just the right quotes and a way to manage them.
